SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER FILMING
Underwater Filming
Professional marine cinematography with certified dive teams across Serbia.
Underwater filming captures imagery beneath the water's surface using specialized waterproof camera housings, lighting systems, and safety protocols. Serbia is landlocked but rich in waterways: the Danube and Sava rivers meet at Belgrade, the Drina River winds along the western border, and the dramatic Djerdap Gorge (Iron Gates) provides cinematic deep-river environments — alongside Pinewood Serbia and Avala Studios tank capability in Belgrade.
We coordinate operations with certified Serbian dive teams, source cinema-grade waterproof equipment, and manage permits through the Directorate for Inland Waterways (Plovput) and local port authorities. Our team handles logistics for Danube and Sava shoots, Djerdap Gorge expeditions, and controlled tank work at Pinewood Serbia — a major European filming destination at competitive crew rates.

Safety First
On Location
Our Belgrade team delivers underwater filming in Serbia's rivers and in controlled tank and pool sets, with certified dive crews and pressure-rated cinema housings.
Here is how this works in practice. We deliver underwater filming as a fully crewed dive operation, run from our Belgrade base with certified commercial divers skilled in film production. Our underwater units include cinematographers, focus pullers, safety divers and dive supervisors, working cinema cameras in pressure-rated housings tied to the resolution and frame rate a project needs. We plan each shoot around the water, the visibility and the dive profile, choosing between open-water work in Serbia's rivers and controlled tank or pool sets where lighting, scene matching and actor work can be locked down.
Here is the short of it. Cast water sequences are supported with safety divers, breathing apparatus for extended takes, pre-shoot training and clear through-water communication, so non-diving performers can achieve convincing underwater shots safely. Directors monitor and direct the underwater crew in real time. For controlled work we use water-tank and pool stages around Belgrade and at PFI Studios near Simanovci; for natural sequences we deploy boats and river dive support. Housings, lighting and dive kit come through our Belgrade base, supplemented from the wider region for demanding shoots.
Here is the breakdown. Serbia is landlocked, so underwater filming centres on its rivers, lakes and controlled stages rather than the sea. The Danube and the Sava meet at Belgrade, giving cinematic urban river environments, and the Danube continues to the dramatic Djerdap gorge. The Iron Gates, where it cuts through Djerdap National Park. The Drina along the western border and the lakes around Tara and Zlatibor add clearer, calmer water for controlled sequences.
Here is what that looks like on the ground. The temperate inland climate means river temperatures swing across four distinct seasons, so we plan dives, exposure protection and crew rotation around the schedule, with the warmer months best for extended open-water work. National parks such as Djerdap apply conservation rules. River permits and access are arranged in advance with the relevant authorities. ATA carnets cover temporary import of housings and dive cameras. English is widely spoken across the local crew base. The cash rebate through the Film in Serbia programme keeps a fully crewed underwater unit cost-good.
FAQ
Underwater Expertise
What cameras can you use underwater?
We operate professional underwater housings for cinema cameras including RED, ARRI, and Sony systems. We match camera and housing combinations to your resolution, frame rate, and image quality requirements.
Do you provide certified dive teams?
Yes, all our underwater crews are certified commercial divers with film production experience in Serbian rivers and tank environments. Teams include underwater cinematographers, focus pullers, safety divers, and dive supervisors as required.
Can you film in pools and tanks?
Yes, we work in controlled environments at Pinewood Serbia Studios and Avala Studios in Belgrade, plus additional pool and production facilities. These controlled settings are ideal for actor work, product shots, and sequences requiring precise control.
What about actor safety underwater?
Actor safety is paramount. We provide safety divers, breathing apparatus for extended takes, pre-shoot training, and clear communication systems. Non-diving actors can achieve impressive underwater shots with proper support.
Where can you film in Serbia?
As a landlocked country, we focus on rivers and tanks. The Danube and Sava meet at Belgrade for cinematic urban river shots, the Djerdap Gorge (Iron Gates) offers dramatic deep-river environments where the Danube cuts through the Carpathians, the Drina River provides scenic western border filming, and Pinewood Serbia and Avala Studios cover tank work. River permits are arranged through Plovput.
How do you handle underwater communication?
We use professional underwater communication systems including through-water comms for diver coordination and surface-to-diver links. Directors can communicate with underwater crews and monitor shots in real-time.
